M: I learned about electronics and 3D printing so I could build a working model of an intersection that could change to an emergency status. O: What's next for you and your project? M: I want to continue working on it and present a better version. I want to work with local officials to get this system in place. O: What do you like to do in your spare time? M: I play football and I curl. I also enjoy listening to music. O: Do you have any advice for kids who want to learn a new skill but don't know where to start? M: Start asking questions about what you are interested in. Take part in science fairs. They're a lot of a fun and a great experience. Miles used an RFID (radio frequency identification device) to send signals from the emergency vehicle to the microcontroller. RFIDs use radio waves to transmit signals. Many everyday items, like bus passes and pet collars, use RFIDs. Miles's project earned him an honourable mention award from the Manitoba government! RFID on the emergency vehicle sends a signal to a switch in the road as it drives over. Road switch sends a signal to traffic lights, which begin flashing to alert other cars.
