The Giant's Causeway looks like someone set out rows of huge toy building blocks—tens of thousands of them! The short ones look like steps leading out into the sea, while the taller pillars form breathtaking cliffs. This landform was created when lava from beneath the ground flowed up through cracks in the Earth's surface. Rivers eventually flowed WHERE? Northern Ireland across this valley, cooling the lava and turning it into a solid rock called basalt. As the basalt cooled, it shrank and cracked into honeycomb patterns. Over time, glaciers and sea waves wore away the surrounding softer rock, leaving the unique shapes of the basalt exposed. Legend has it that the stones were placed here by an Irish warrior giant named Finn McCool. He wanted to battle another giant, Benandonner, on a nearby Scottish island but couldn't swim across the Irish Sea that divided them. Finn piled up rocks so that he could run to Scotland! If this were really Finn McCool's boot, it would mean that he wore a size 60—that's more than four times larger than the biggest human boots you've likely ever seen!
