B L U E J A Y B L U E J A Y Fave Foods Blue jays eat acorns, hazelnuts, wild fruit, corn, and insects. Size They are a bit bigger than robins. Family Blue jays are related to ravens, rooks, jackdaws, crows, magpies, and other jays. Finding Food These birds spend lots of time gathering nuts! They hide their food in safe spots to eat later. Cool Crests Blue jays show how they feel with the crests on their heads. When the crest is down, they feel calm. When the crest stands up, they are on high alert! Best Builders Male and female blue jays gather twigs and soft roots for their nests. Then females build them. Reuse and Recycle Migrating blue jays sometimes return to their old nests. They clean them up and lay eggs in them again. Egg-cellent Eggs Mom blue jays lay two to seven eggs between March and July. Good Team Moms keep the eggs warm in the nest, while dads bring back food. Where They Live Blue jays live near the edges of forests, city parks, and backyards, mostly in the eastern parts of North America.
