PHOTO of real instrument (handmade) Ooze ' s Challenge Add two more small straw pieces and try blowing again. Did the harmonica sound different? Move the straw pieces around to try making different tones. Sound is caused by vibrations that travel through the air to your eardrums. When you blow into the harmonica, your breath causes the straws and rubber bands to vibrate, creating the sounds. What to do: 1 Cut two small pieces (about the size of your pinkie nail) off the end of your straw. 2 Stretch the wide rubber band around one craft stick, lengthwise. 3 Slide one straw piece under the rubber band, close to the end of the stick. Repeat with the other straw piece. 4 Place the other craft stick on top of the straws and wide rubber band. Wrap a thin rubber band around each end twice. 5 Hold the ends of the harmonica. Blow into the centre between the craft sticks. What do you hear? You'll need: • 1 paper straw • 1 wide rubber band • 2 thin rubber bands • 2 craft sticks Dr. Zed explains straws thick rubber band craft sticks thin rubber bands Chickadee 19
