M a k e r S p a c e 18 OWL November 2025 FIRE PROJECT When Fatima was in grade 7, she invented a new kind of fire detector as a science fair project. Let's learn more about her and her invention! WHAT: Fire Fusion— a "smart" fire detector. WHY: Current fire detectors sense smoke, but they can't tell if the smoke is coming from an actual fire. Fatima wanted to take fire detecting a step further! HOW: She coded multiple sensors to detect not only smoke but also flame, heat, and motion. And if her fire detector senses fire, it sends an alert to a phone. For her prototype, she attached all the sensors to a birdhouse, tested the device, and reprogrammed it again and again until it worked.
