PWHL SEATTLE AND PWHL VANCOUVER The six original PWHL teams did not get their names until their second season. The league's two newest teams will also spend their first season without names as PWHL Seattle and PWHL Vancouver. MINNESOTA FROST Minnesota is known as the State of Hockey. The name Frost honours Minnesota's love of ice sports. MONTREAL VICTOIRE Victoire is French for "victory." This name highlights Montreal's history of excellence in hockey. The fleur- de-lys in the logo is a symbol of Quebec. NEW YORK SIRENS The name Sirens was picked to represent the excitement of New York, one of the busiest cities in the world. TORONTO SCEPTRES A sceptre is a royal staff. The name refers to an old Toronto nickname: the Queen City. The logo is a sceptre with "TS" wrapped around it. OTTAWA CHARGE Charge references the city motto: "Advance- Ottawa-En Avant." En avant is French for "onward." 1892: The earliest refereed game of women's hockey is documented in Barrie, Ontario. 1916: Teen Albertine Lapensée scores 15 goals for the Cornwall Victorias in the Eastern Ladies' Hockey League. 1987: The first Women's World Hockey Championship happens in Toronto. 1992: Manon Rhéaume is the first and only woman to play in an NHL game. She plays one period as a goalie for the Tampa Bay Lightning. TIMELINE OF WOMEN'S HOCKEY T he PWHL is the highest-paying women's hockey league ever. In earlier leagues, female players barely made any money at all. They needed day jobs to pay their bills so they could keep playing. And working those day jobs made it hard to find time to practise. Sports leagues rely on ticket sales and broadcasting revenue to support the league. Unfortunately, these earlier leagues failed because they couldn't make enough money. In 2019, star female players formed the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association (PWHPA). They refused to play pro hockey until a stable league with proper funding and support was made so that it could grow a fan base (and sell tickets). Four years later, the PWHL was formed! A STABLE LEAGUE IS AN EXCITING LEAGUE! The PWHL is the first women's league where the players are paid enough to focus on hockey as their only job. Now they have more time to train. They play in larger rinks, and their games are televised across the country. Fans have responded to this excitement, too.
