OWL: What did sports mean to you as a kid? Donnovan: It was the source of my confidence, friends, and identity. If I wasn't playing sports, I was watching or thinking about sports. At every family gathering, sports was a topic of conversation. In school, every project I submitted was about sports. O: How did you get your start as a sports broadcaster? D: I interned at the Score Television Network and helped with university football coverage. I even flew to Saskatoon to cover the Canadian college football championship, the Vanier Cup. That week I learned more than I did during my entire university career! I was offered a job at the network before I finished university. O: Were you ever interested in other types of broadcasting? D: I would have taken any broadcasting role! But I believed I could find a way in sports. As I get older and my interests and knowledge vary, I become more interested in and qualified to do things outside of sports. Even in my traditional sports work, I'm looking at sports through a lens of news, pop culture, music, fashion, politics, and more. O: What is your biggest love outside of sports? D: My family. I've incorporated family into my work in the past. My grandparents voiced a promo for my podcast and radio show. I've used my grandfather's immigration story to touch on how sports helped my family assimilate into Canada. Every day, I try to build my career around the needs of my family as best I can. O: Who were you the most excited to meet through your job? D: Stephen Curry. He's a role model in terms of his excellence, his philanthropy, and his humility. To see how he carries himself up close was very cool. O: What advice would you give to aspiring sports broadcasters? D: Don't shy away from what makes you unique. You can do a better job being yourself than trying to act like someone else. Also, this is a competitive business, but that's okay because that's how you improve and get better. Embrace the grind and attack the hurdles. SPORTS BROADCASTER! MEET A FAST FACTS Donnovan has been a TV and radio host and producer in sports media since 2013.
