26 Chickadee "And so Maang dove, deeper and deeper. Maang was gone for a long time, and everyone grew concerned. Finally, Maang surfaced—but without any earth. "Many of our relations took turns trying: Amik, Zhaangweshi, even my ancestors, but none could bring any earth to the surface. "Finally, the last of our relations came forward. It was Wazhashk." Mishiikenh paused, and I looked around to find the animal with the tiny voice that spoke earlier. She was smiling ear to ear. Mishiikenh continued. "Everyone doubted Wazhashk. They said she was too small. But Nanabozho said if she wanted to try, she should. "So Wazhashk dove down. Time went by, and by, and by. Some muttered that she had been gone too long. Then Wazhashk floated to the top. "With great sadness, Nanabozho picked her up in his arms and said,'Wazhashk did not make it.' "Together they sang a song for Wazhashk, honouring her bravery. "'Wait!' a voice shouted, 'Look at her paw!' "Inside her paw was a bit of earth. Wazhashk did it! She gave herself for us that day." "But wait," Amik asked, confused. "Why isn't it called Wazhashk Island instead?" "Ah," replied Mishiikenh slowly. 26 Chickadee
