What if people could teleport? What if dogs could talk? Email chickadee@owlkids.com with your questions and a photo of yourself, or send a letter to You Asked? (address page 31). Chick and Dee Answered! O nions are spicy root vegetables. Not only do they add flavour to food, but they are chock-full of nutrients and vitamins, too. But when you chop an onion, tiny droplets of a tear-jerking gas are released into the air and can get into your eyes. Your eyes react by making tears to wash away the stinging sensation. Don't worry, the feeling doesn't last long. And chilling the onion in the fridge or wearing safety glasses can help reduce the sting! H umans have lungs to breathe, but fish breathe with special organs called gills. People and fish both need oxygen to live, but fish get it from water instead of air. As a fish swims along, its gills remove oxygen from the water. The oxygen then moves through its body so the fish can breathe. Human lungs can't process oxygen from water, so we get oxygen from air instead. 28 Chickadee TEXT: BECKIE MORRISON (FISH, WINGS); MANDY NG (ONIONS) PHOTOS: DREAMSTIME ILLUSTRATIONS: RÉMY SIMARD Why do we cry when we cut onions? Luke Luke I f people had wings, we could fly to school or reach the top of a mountain in no time! We could get around without cars or planes, which would cut down pollution and help the environment. But human bodies aren't designed to fly. Our wings would need to be pretty big to lift our bodies off the ground. An adult's wings would need to be about the length of a delivery truck. Maybe we should keep our feet on the pavement! What if people had wings? Stella Stella Why can fish breathe underwater, but we can't? Quentin Quentin
