Zhashagi stood tall nearby. Zhiishiib waddled back and made her way into the circle. More animals joined us to hear the story. Mishiikenh began. "Long, long ago there was a great flood. Water covered the lands on Earth, and all that remained was a man named Nanabozho, the fish, and many of us here in this circle. Amik, your ancestors were there. And the ancestors of Zhaangweshi and Zhiishiib, too." "Were mine there?" A tiny squeaky voice piped up. "Shush! He's telling a story!" Amik said. The voice belonged to Wazhashk, who got quiet. Mishiikenh smiled at Wazhashk warmly and continued his story. "Nanabozho used a log to float along the water, but he knew he could not do this forever. He, and many of our relations, needed land. He had an idea. "I will swim down below and take some of the soil from the bottom. I will bring it back up, and with the help of the four winds, we will create land from it,' said Nanabozho. "So Nanabozho dove down, going deeper and deeper. He felt his lungs start to hurt and knew he could not go any farther. He came back to the surface. "Then Maang waddled up. 'I can do it.
