Chickadee 11 Many tunnels connect the rooms in the underground city. A Buried Ancient City In Turkey, there is an underground city called Derinkuyu. Built by an ancient civilization about 2,000 years ago, the city's tunnels and rooms were carved out of soft volcanic rock. The huge city goes 26 storeys deep and could fit 20,000 people! It had kitchens, storage rooms, stables, and even a school. Historians think the underground city was built to keep people safe from invaders. Diamonds for Keeps Diamonds are formed deep in the Earth, where temperatures are extremely hot. But sometimes during volcanic eruptions, the gemstones travel closer to the surface. At Craters of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas, US, visitors can dig for diamonds on an ancient volcanic rock. Since the park opened, over 35,000 diamonds have been unearthed there— and visitors can keep whatever they find!
