Chick and Dee Answered! B ananas go from green to yellow as they ripen. Banana peels have a pigment called carotenoid (say: ka-ROT-en-oyd) that makes them turn yellow. And they also contain chlorophyll (say: KLOR-ah-fill), which makes plants green. When bananas are cut from their plants, they stop getting the flow of chlorophyll. As these bananas ripen, the chlorophyll that's left in them breaks down and fades away. Then the carotenoids take over and the bright yellow stands out on its own! M ammals are warm- blooded, breathe air through lungs, give birth to live young, make milk to feed babies, and have hair—and whales check all these boxes. Even though whales live in the ocean and seem like fish, they have to come up to the surface for a breath of fresh air. Mom whales also don't hatch eggs like fish do, and they feed their calves with milk. And although whales look smooth and hairless, they are actually born with whiskers. The hairs help them sense their surroundings, but they shed them shortly after birth. Wonderful whales! 28 Chickadee TEXT: MARIA COUTO PHOTOS: DREAMSTIME ILLUSTRATIONS: RÉMY SIMARD CONSULTANT: KATIE MCMAHON, RIPLEY'S AQUARIUM OF CANADA (WHALE) I f there were life on other planets, we would have intergalatic neighbours! Maybe we could visit each other's planets, too. They could show us their customs, and we could show them ours. As far as we know, none of the other known planets have life like Earth. That means no plants, animals, or humans. If there were living things, scientists think they would likely be smaller forms of bacteria, not big aliens like you see in the movies!
