image tk L et's keep it real! A French artist who goes by the name Scaf knows how to fool passersby. He creates murals on abandoned buildings that look like they're 3D. His artwork includes everything from animals to superheroes to cars. When he finishes each piece, Scaf takes a selfie with the artwork and posts it online so people can get a sense of its size and the 3D effect. As for why he creates his masterpieces, he says they're just meant to add life to the abandoned spots! Mission accomplished. JUST FOR KICKS FOOT FOOD S ometimes you get new shoes for a new school year. But chances are, they're nothing like these. Earlier this year, Nike released custom sneakers inspired by sushi! The unique kicks have panels that look like salmon and rice. Plus, there's leather near the toe with a seaweed-like texture. And then there's this: the sneakers come with built- in chopsticks! Unfortunately, only three pairs of the shoes were made, and they were all won in a contest this past spring. So we'll have to stick with our not-so-food-friendly kicks for now. SHARP SCULPTURES S o much for paintbrushes and canvases. Colombian artist Federico Uribe repurposes pencil crayons into sculptures of animals, including tigers, giraffes, and zebras. Why does he use this school supply? Uribe says he has happy memories of colouring with them as a kid. He hopes that people who come across his artwork feel a similar kind of joy when they see how it was created. 3D DONE WELL OFF THE WALL owlconnected.com 7 TEXT: MARIA BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS: MATTEA LINAE, GEOFFREY GASPARD (3D PRINTED SCHOOL); ZENCIX (QUIZ WHIZ); BESPOKEIND (SHOES); GETTYISTOCK (GIRL, SUSHI); FEDERICO URIBE (PENCIL SCULPTURE); YOUTUBE.COM/ ÉPÍTECHTURE (AIRPLANE CABIN); SCAF (3D MURAL) PIECING TOGETHER PENCILS
