KEEPING
ANXIETY
IN CHECK
Dr. Maria Rogers is a
clinical psychologist
from the University
of Ottawa. We asked her about how to
deal with anxiety, and why it's
not always a bad thing.
OWL: What is anxiety?
MR: It's our body's way of telling
us that we are nervous or worried
about something.
O: Does it help or harm us?
MR: It can be helpful, in that it alerts
us if something scary is about to
happen. For instance, we might feel
anxiety if our pet dog pulls off its
leash and runs away. [That anxiety]
propels us to do something—such as
getting help from an adult.
However, sometimes anxiety
sneaks up on us, even when there
is no real threat. For instance,
we might worry about something
happening to a loved one, even
when there is no reason for it. In
this case, anxiety can be a problem.
O: How do I calm down when
feeling anxious?
MR: First, take three big, deep belly
breaths to reset. Then pick a strategy
that will help you calm your mind
and body. Such strategies might
include yoga or meditation, a short
run, listening to music, shooting
hoops, or reading. It also helps to
talk to someone you trust. Remind
yourself that anxiety is normal—
usually it will pass! But if you can't
seem to shake this feeling, talk to
an adult you trust.
