Why is ocean water
blue but clear in a
glass? Benji
The ocean looks blue because of the way
water absorbs sunlight. Sunlight is made
up of all the colours of the rainbow.
When sunlight hits the ocean, the water
molecules suck in all the other colours
except for blue. The blue light is
scattered, so the water looks blue.
But you need a lot of deep water
for this to happen—
much more than
in a glass.
