Explore tree
cones with Chirp
reader Navy.
How
it
works
Cones
have
seeds
inside.
When
it's
warm
and
dry
out,
the
cone's
scales
open
and
the
seeds
fall
out
to
grow
new
trees!
When
it's
cold
or
wet,
the
scales
close
to
protect
the
seeds.
Both
cones
will
close
in
water,
but
the
cold
one
closes
faster
to
protect
the
seeds.
You'll need:
• tree cones
• 2 clear jars
• cold water
• hot water
What to do: What to do:
1
Put a cone in
each jar.
2
Fill one jar with
cold water and
the other with
hot water.
3
Watch what
happens to the cones.
Is there a difference
between the hot and
cold cones?
BONUS:
After a few hours,
remove the pine cones
and see what happens.
Ask
a
grown-up
to
help
you.
