The Good and the Bad Microbes can only be seen through a microscope. Most are friendly, but some microbes can make us sick. BACTERIA These are one-celled organisms that multiply quickly into large groups. FUNGI These are multicellular organisms, like mould, mildew, and yeast. VIRUSES On their own, these aren't living things. They are made of proteins that need another cell, called a host, to survive. CALL THE PROS! One group of healthy microbes are known as probiotics. These beneficial bacteria and yeasts may reduce inflammation and allergies. They also help fight off germs that want to live in and on our bodies! PARASITES These are like tiny plants and animals. They move into a body and feed off nutrients from their new host. TEXT: JOHN CROSSINGHAM CONSULTANT: IAN BRASG, HUMBER RIVER HEALTH ILLUSTRATIONS: SUHARU OGAWA GERMS! These are microbes that cause illness. There are four types. MICROBE MARVELS Get to know these teeny-tiny living things. HELPERS! Most microbes are not germs and can actually benefit our bodies. 20 OWL December 2024 Snapshot
