A Race at the Top of the World EVENT: The North Pole Marathon Marathons are run in places all over the world. These 42 km (26 mi.) races are considered the ultimate test of endurance. But perhaps the most difficult one of all is the North Pole Marathon. Taking place nearly every year since 2002, this is the most northerly marathon in the world. It's run on the frozen ice of the Arctic Ocean. And what are the conditions like? The temperature is often around –30°C (–22°F), and the ground is covered in snow and ice. The best time was recorded in 2024, when Billy Hafferty of the US finished in 3 hours and 14 minutes. By comparison, the fastest marathon time ever was 2 hours and 35 seconds, by Kelvin Kiptum of Kenya at the 2023 Chicago marathon. Some also wear face masks to protect against the cold, windy conditions. They're off! Brave runners start the race in the North Pole Marathon. Running on ice and snow? A serious challenge, for sure! 14 OWL December 2024 Insider
