Students can fi nd a partner and tell each other their stories. 3 4 Flamingos often stand on one leg to rest and save their energy. Have the class try it for themselves. Get out a timer and see who can hold the position for two minutes without touching their other foot down. Flamingos are pink, thanks to dyes in the shrimp and algae they eat. What other animals are pink? Make a list or fi nd pictures on the internet. DLP-BRD2 Flamingos live in big groups called colonies. Ask students what other words they know for groups of animals, such as "herd," "fl ock," "school" or "pack." Which animal groups do these words describe? Then look at pictures of other animals that live there, such as koalas, kangaroos, and platypuses. Rainbow lorikeets have a bright red beak and colourful feathers. What other colourful birds can students name? Which colourful birds live in your neighbourhood? Go outside with binoculars and see what birds you can spot. DLP-BRD3 Rainbow lorikeets live in rainforests and woodlands. Ask students to imagine they're exploring a rainforest. Research and talk about other ways animals keep themselves cool in the heat. 3 4 When a stork spreads its wings, the distance from one wingtip to the other can be as long as a small car! Ask students to spread their arms and pretend they're a stork. How long is their "wingspan"? Name other birds that also have large wingspans. Storks don't sing like other birds. They make a loud clacking noise by tapping their bills together. And chicks can honk, a noise that sounds like donkeys braying. Listen to it here: www.owlkids.com/storks What do you think the chicks might be trying to say? Play more sound files to hear the variety of sounds birds can make. DLP-BRD4 Storks build giant nests in treetops, on cliffs, and even on telephone poles. Find pictures online and talk about why these birds build such big nests. Chameleons shoot out their super-sticky tongues to snatch insect snacks. It takes them less than a second to grab their prey. Talk about different ways animals catch prey, such as with talons, speed, venom, or webs. 3 4 Almost half of the world's chameleon species live on the island of Madagascar. What other animals live in Madagascar? How many can you list? How many of those animals had you heard of? How many are new? Chameleons often roll their tails into a spiral shape. Where else do you see spiral patterns in nature? As a class, look at Flow, Spin, Grow by Patchen Barss to learn about other patterns we see in nature, such as branching and spinning. DLP-AA2 Many chameleons can change their skin colour to regulate temperature or communicate with other chameleons. Gather shoeboxes and make ocean dioramas. Paint a blue background and fill your scene with sand, shells, plants, and sea creatures using paper, pipe cleaners, and plastic animals. There are many great samples online to spark your creativity. Ask students if they've been to the ocean. Brainstorm a list of things you can see at the beach, such as sand, swimmers, and waves. Then list things you can do at the beach, such as building a sandcastle or splashing in the water. Use ocean language to encourage visual thinking. Make a list of reptile characteristics: they lay eggs, have cold blood, etc. 4 Komodo starts with the letter K. What other words start with K? Make a list or a word wall. Have students use the words in a sentence. DLP-AA2 Komodo dragons are the world's biggest lizards. Can you think of other record-breaking animals? Get a close-up look at a gecko foot here: www.owlkids.com/geckos. Like all reptiles, geckos are covered in scales, which are hard plates similar to human fi ngernails. Can you think of other animals with scales (such as fi sh)? DLP-AA2 Geckos can shed their tails if a predator catches them (the tails grow back). They also use their tails to help them balance as they climb trees. Talk about other animals that use tails for balance (cats, kangaroos, beavers, squirrels). Have everyone stand on one foot. How do you keep your balance? Discussion Topics R E P T I L E S
